Why Choose Online Tuition?
Recent years have seen a massive shift in the way that learning can take place. We have seen the world’s biggest educational institutions successfully shift to online learning for prolonged periods of time, with universities and schools still combining it with in-person teaching due to its educational advantages, as well as it’s convenience and flexibility . There are even now many internationally recognised purely online university and school programmes.
Online tuition alleviates the anxieties of the classroom that many pupils suffer from in silence. These obstacles restrict students’ learning as they often feel too anxious to ask about what they don’t know, allowing themselves to fall behind and ultimately limit their academic potential.
In my online classroom, students feel comfortable in their own learning environment, gaining access to expert teaching from the comfort of their own home. This allows them not to worry about any external distractions, and focus on the opportunity to learn that is in-front of them. I have personally found that my students are much better at sharing the things that they are struggling with in this setting, taking control of their own tuition journey whereas students before were more passive and wanted the tutor to decide.
My students prefer online learning not only for its convenience, but they believe that there are more opportunities to contribute and to learn in an online setting. When learning online, it is stressed to the student that they must verbalise and talk through every step that they are doing, even when both student and teacher can see what each other are writing. This forces the student to develop a deeper understanding of every single step that they complete in their head. As well as increasing the chances that a student will retain this knowledge, this significantly increases their confidence as they feel they can explain what they are doing and why they are doing it, as opposed to simply doing it to get a mark on an exam.
Myself and many fellow tutors who I have spoken to also believe that there is a massive increase in productivity both inside and outside of lessons. We have found that we are able to get through more content in shorter periods of time, and that the time-saved from travelling allows both student and tutor to put more time and effort outside of the lessons into the lessons. Both lesson-prep time on the tutors side and homework completion time and effort on the student sized have drastically increased due to the online learning transition.
Another advantage of online tuition is the option for every lesson to be recorded. This allows the student to go back through lessons to find any explanation or question and watch back exactly how they initially learned it, providing the ultimate revision resource. This is also a very useful tool for any parents who wish to take a hands on approach and see their child’s progress first-hand by watching back the actual lesson!
Of course, there are the obvious advantages of online learning when it comes to the current global pandemic. The whole reason for the initial switch to online learning was to eradicate the risk of covid-19 infection, and I believe it is important for tutors and parents to keep doing their part in eliminating the spread of the virus.
Despite this being the initial reason for the shift, many of my fellow tutors and I strongly believe that online learning is the way forward for years to come, beyond the pandemic.
